U.S. District Court Judge Brendan A. Hurson of Maryland extended the injunction on the enforcement of President Trump’s ban on gender-affirming medical care for those under age 19. Judge Hurson has blocked the enforcement of the law nationwide. Erin In The Morning has this story.

Democratic members of the U.S. Senate stood up for transgender people last week, blocking an effort by Republicans to stop funding for schools which allow transgender athletes to participate in women’s and girls’ sports. The bill is filibustered in the Senate. The bill is not dead, but it will need support from some Democrats to end the filibuster. This story comes from Them.

A Black transgender woman named Amyri Dio was shot to death in Milwaukee on February 21. She was 23 years old. Police are investigating the incident as a homicide. The Advocate has this story.

An investigation into the torture and murder of Sam Nordquist shows that his attackers had coerced two children to join them in the beating. This story comes from ABC News.

Last Tuesday, President Trump made a speech to a joint session of Congress. As you might expect, there were quite a few statements in the speech which do not square with facts. For one, he claimed that the Biden administration spent $8 million on “making mice transgender.” The best sense that anyone could make of this was a program that made “transgenic mice,” mice with some human genes, who were then used in cancer research and the such. When pressed, the White House also pointed to studies which used mice while looking into the effects of hormones used as medications. NBC News has a full fact-check of the speech.

California Governor Gavin Newsom sat for an interview with far-right podcaster Charlie Kirk. (It seems that Mr. Kirk was Governor Newsom’s guest on the governor’s first podcast, and yet, it seems like Mr. Kirt was asking the questions.) Governor Newsom called the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s and girls’ sports “deeply unfair.” CalMatters has this story.

In Wisconsin, a public hearing of the Education Committee of the state assembly lasted 10 1/2 hours. It covered topics including transgender athletes, and the use of a student’s preferred name and pronoun. Most of the comments seemed to oppose the pills proposed by Republican lawmakers on these topics. This story comes from Wisconsin Public Radio.

In another laughable incident, two male police officers went into the ladies’ room at a store, to confront what they thought was a transgender person. It turns out that the person in question was a butch lesbian who was presenting in a largely masculine way that day. LGBTQ Nation has this story.

In spite of that last story and others like it, the Texas House of Representatives just passed a bathroom bill. There is no certainty as to how anyone’s sex will be determined if this bill is passed. This story comes from the Texas Tribune.

Texas was also the site of a new bill which, if passed and signed into law, would charge transgender people with “felony fraud” for presenting according to their gender identity. It is a prime example of political hyperbole coming into legislation. Erin Reed has this story.

Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon signed into law a bill which allows prisoners to sue the prison if they are housed with a transgender cellmate. This story comes from LGBTQ Nation.

Over in Montana, speeches by Zooey Zephyr and SJ Howell, two transgender people who are members of the state House of Representatives, persuaded 29 Republicans to vote against a pair of anti-transgender bills, thereby killing those bills. Erin Reed has this story.

The United States has pulled out of the United Nations’ LGBTI Core Group, a group which fight for the civil rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and intersex people. President Trump’s executive order recognizing only two genders denies the existence of transgender or intersex individuals. This story comes from The Advocate.

LGBTQ Nation reports that the Trump administration is offering transgender people in the military twice the usual severance pay if they just leave on their own. It sounds like the Trump administration is desperate, but perhaps they just want to avoid having a series of lengthy court fights.

A Virginia psychologist who works with transgender and non-binary veterans, as well as other LGBTQ+ veterans, quit working for the Veterans Administration in protest over President Trump’s executive orders attacking transgender rights. Dr. Mary Brinkmeyer said that she was told that services should continue as usual while the V.A. figures out how to implement directives from President Trump, but things changed rapidly. She talked about it in an interview with The Advocate.

At the Academy Awards, Emilia Perez was not a big winner, but did win in three categories, including best Supporting Actress. Zoe Saldana, who has mentioned her transgender nephew in other acceptance speeches, failed to mention him on the state at the Academy Awards. none of the winners for Emilia Perez mentioned transgender people in their acceptance speeches, according to Them.

Germany has issued a travel warning for those planning to visit the U.S. The warning is for transgender and non-binary travelers. The Advocate has this story.

An editorial in The Advocate calls for presenting a human face to marginalized voices as a way to win an election. Unfortunately, the election of President Trump makes one wonder how much empathy voters have.

Imagine being a transgender person in Texas. Imagine working as a staffer at the state Capitol. Such a person exists, and is profiled by the Texas Tribune.
