This Wednesday (27), IBGE – Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) released Civil Registry data for 2022, which shows an increase of around 20% in same-sex marriages compared to 2021. The numbers exceed 11 thousand registrations, setting a record. However, it is important to emphasize that these do not cover stable unions, only civil marriages registered at the registry office.
The data
In 2022, 11,022 same-sex marriages were registered, with 4,390 unions between male spouses and 6,632 between female spouses. In 2021, the number of marriages was lower, reaching 9,202, with 3,600 between men and 5,602 between women. As in 2021, the number of marriages between women was higher than that between men, with a difference of 2,242 records.
By region
Assessing with more accuracy and thinking about the number of marriages divided by region, we can see a greater concentration in the Southeast Region, which covers the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo. In this region, 3,746 same-sex marriages were registered between women and 2,466 between men, totaling 6,212, on average 57% of the national figure.
Meanwhile, the region that showed lees number of marriages was the North Region, with 292 marriages between women and 170 between men, in a total of 462 records, 4.2% of the country’s value. This difference can be explained by several factors, which include cultural differences, levels of community acceptance, availability of resources and general support. Furthermore, the Southeast region, especially in the large cities such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, has a higher population density and a more developed infrastructure than cities in other regions.
Age range
Another way to analyze the number of marriages is by age group. Still according to IBGE data, the age with the most records is between 30 and 34 years old, both in marriages between women and men. On the other hand, the lowest record is between 15 and 19, showing none below these age range. When compared to the number between people of different sexes, the preferred age is 25 to 29 years old, with three marriages of children under 15 years old.
General value
Data from 2022 shows the highest number of same-sex unions since the resolution of the National Justice Council (CNJ) in 2013. The right to marriage was guaranteed to the LGBTQIA+ population. by this resolution.
Despite this growth among same-sex unions, if we compare the total number of marriages in 2021 and 2022, the increase is not so significant. In 2021, 932,502 civil marriages were registered while in 2022 there were 970,041 registered, an increase of 3.8%.
Número de casamentos homoafetivos no Brasil cresceu 148,7% em 9 anos, segundo IBGE
