Jaymes Black

Jaymes Black was announced as the new President of the Trevor Project. They are the first nonbinary person to head the organization, according to LGBTQ Nation.

Judge Joseph Whyte has denied a request from Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey to have access to the medical records of transgender teen patients at Washington University in St. Louis, to see if they are in compliance with the ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors. He had been granted redacted records, but those were not enough for him. The Advocate has this story. This decision will likely be appealed, especially if the Supreme Court decides that Tennessee has the right to ban gender-affirming care.

Last month, a judge ruled that the state of Florida cannot enforce its ban on gender-affirming care for minors. The state has appealed, and quickly asked a judge to issue a temporary stay on the previous judge’s order. This week, they were told that that request was denied. “As the court found, the state of Florida has not been able to provide a single instance of a Florida transgender adolescent or adult receiving inappropriate treatment or experiencing regret over care they received in the state,” according to the decision. In a follow-up to last week’s reports that the Biden Administration does not approve of gender-confirming surgery for minors, Neera Tanden, the director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, told HRC president Kelly Robinson that the administration’s policy remains unchanged. She confirmed that the administration respects the right for families to “make the medical decisions that they and their doctors determine are best for them,” but also said, “Gender-affirming surgeries are typically reserved for adults, and we believe they should be.” The Advocate has this story.

Republicans in the House of Representatives have voted to reverse the Biden administration’s new rules equating laws against transgender people with discrimination on the basis of sex. The bill will not get signed by President Biden, but this will send a message to the voters back home. The Hill has this story.

A federal judge has halted enforcement of the Biden administration’s new rules that discrimination against transgender students is discrimination on the basis of sex. There are now 15 states in which that rule cannot be enforced, according to The Advocate.

Seven states have filed a suit to block the Biden administration from enforcing its new rules which protect transgender people from discrimination. They are led by Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, the same person who was told by a judge that he cannot access the un-redacted medical records of minors. The Hill has this story.

Recently, the House of Representatives passed a military spending bill which included a ban on paying for gender-confirming surgeries. The House also included a ban on the use of military money being spent for gender-affirming medical care for minor children of members of the military. This week, the Senate debated that same bill. Democrats proposed an amendment to remove those anti-transgender positions, but all the Republicans in the Senate plus Joe Manchin voted against it, to the bill will continue to contains provisions which prevent gender-affirming medical care. The Medical University of South Carolina has announced that they will discontinue gender-affirming medical care, even for adults. The South Carolina Daily Gazette has this story.

A study by Keck Medicine at USC finds that transgender people are twice as likely as cisgender people to get cirrhosis of the liver. There is not certainty whether this is the result of HRT medicines, or whether transgender people are likely to drink more alcohol.

There will soon be a monument to Nancy Valverde, a lesbian who was arrested for wearing men’s clothing, long after Marlene Dietrich made that fashionable. LGBTQ Nation has the story. She seems at the least to be one who tried to blur gender roles.

A new play set to debut at the Edinburgh Fringe features Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint as characters, hosting an intervention for J.K. Rowling. Yes, her TERF tendencies are very much a part of the plot–in fact, the play is entitled TERF. It tries to be even-handed, though, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Back in October, we reported that the Supreme Court of Japan had declared that the country’s requirement that a person be surgically neutered before the legal sex can be changed was unconstitutional. However, they sent the specific case back to the high court, which was told to determine if the plaintiff met the other requirements for a change of legal gender. This week, the High Court granted the plaintiff a change of legal gender. The Associated Prss has this story.

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro was accused of having an extra-marital affair with a transgender newscaster. He has not denied the accusation, but has taken issue with the anti-transgender attitude o too many of his fellow citizens. This story comes from LGBTQ Nation.
