Soap opera boycotted in Mexico for a gay kiss arrives on Brazilian streaming service

“De Repente Pais“, a Televisa original soap opera, now available on Globoplay’s catalog in Brazil, drew attention on Mexican TV for featuring the first gay kiss in prime time. The show, which addresses various social issues, faced strong resistance and boycott from conservative groups.
The romantic scene occurs between the characters Rafael Restrepo, a veterinarian played by Andrés Zuno, and Rodrigo Conde, a police investigator portrayed by Raúl Coronado. According to Globoplay, despite the initial controversy and attempts at censorship, the soap opera continued with its planned narrative, culminating in the historic kiss scene on November 15, 2017, which became a milestone in Mexican television.

The soap opera tells the story of Mauricio, played by Sebastián Rulli, a businessman and owner of Logatoy’s, a toy store on the brink of bankruptcy. In an effort to save his business, Mauricio plans to marry for financial gain, hoping that his future father-in-law will invest in the company. However, his plan falls apart when Anifer, a girl who claims to be his daughter, unexpectedly appears on the day of the wedding.
Moving to a humble neighborhood with Anifer, Mauricio begins to interact with former employees of his store. Among them is Renée, played by Maite Perroni, a neighbor who prioritizes her academic career and has little interest in romance. However, meeting Mauricio and Anifer leads her to reconsider her plans and open up to new possibilities.
In addition to the main storyline, “De Repente Pais” explores the lives and challenges of other characters, addressing different stages of parenthood. The series aims to portray the diversity of family experiences across various generations and social classes.
Now available on Globoplay, the soap opera consists of 103 episodes, with 20 episodes released weekly for streaming service viewers.
