Hugo Bonemer, a 36-year-old actor, voice actor, and presenter from Maringá, marks his return to immersive theater with the debut of the musical ‘Querido Evan Hansen’. Scheduled for the second week of June, at the iconic Multiplan Theater in Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian production of the acclaimed ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ brings to the stage the intricate tapestry of mental health dynamics, focusing on Generation Z.
Under the direction of Tadeu Aguiar and produced by Renata Borges and Eduardo Bakr, the show promises to reinterpret a narrative that has resonated globally, both on Broadway stages and on cinema screens in 2021. In the role of Connor Murphy, Bonemer unveils the layers of a character who is unable to confront existential emptiness, ultimately leading to his resignation The work delves into the vicissitudes of young people in the face of the virtual world, challenging the identities they produce and the truths they conceal. The play invites reflection on the emotional isolation that permeates our times and the psychological pressures endured by teenagers.
“The show exposes the emptiness that we all have from the perspective of teenagers in a world of social media where it’s not known who is or seems to be, and many get lost in the narratives they invent about themselves. The character I play can’t deal with the emptiness within him and gives up“, explains Hugo.
With “Querido Evan Hansen,” Hugo Bonemer continues to demonstrate his commitment to plays that not only entertain but also provoke important social and personal reflection. The expectation is that “Querido Evan Hansen” will offer the Brazilian audience a window into the complexities of modern youth, broadening the dialogue about mental health through art.
“Querido Evan Hansen”, with text by Steven Levenson and music and lyrics by the duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul – renowned for their work on “La La Land” and “Aladdin” – is a theatrical spectacle that has won six Tony Awards, the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album, and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical. In its journey, it started from Washington to Off-Broadway, reached Broadway, and after tremendous success, expanded globally, generating adaptations in book and film, as well as a devoted legion of fans.
