An animated commercial for Doritos in Mexico went viral by showing a couple of gay ghosts to coincide with the celebrations for the Day of the Dead, a tradition in the country. The information is from Queerty.

Called “Nunca es Tarde Para Ser Quien Eres” (“It’s Never Too Late To Be Who You Are”, in free translation), the video shows a family going to a cemetery to make an offering to their deceased “Tio Alberto” (uncle Alberto). At the tomb, an elderly woman says, “My brother, I miss you,” and just then the ghost version of him appears.

After a conversation, he shows another ghost man, leaving the whole family surprised and after questioning who he was, the ghost says “Es Mario, mi pareja” (“My partner”), leaving everyone amazed.

However, his sister, the oldest among all the family, claps her hands and says “what a miracle, I thought I would be alone forever”, and then the family seems to accept the homo-affective relationship of the ghosts. The commercial ends with the couple hugging and the hashtag #OrgulloTodoElAño (“Pride All Year”).

According to a spokesman for Doritos Mexico in an interview with Advocate, the idea of the commercial is to celebrate respect between people. “In Mexico, the Day of the Dead is a celebration of life. It is time to share our respect, love and unity with all those we cherish, even if they are gone.”

“And it’s an opportunity for Doritos Mexico to celebrate love and our commitment to the LGBTQ+ community every day. With the commercial ‘It’s never too late for you to be who you are’, we mean it’s never too late to share who you are, and when you’re ready, we’ll support you.”

This is not the first time that Doritos Mexico has launched a commercial in support of the LGBT cause. In January, it released a video called “El Mejor Regalo” (The Best Gift), showing a father seeking to accept his son’s sexual orientation.
