The Brazilian film “Baby“, directed by Marcelo Caetano, was selected for the competitive showcase at the Lima Film Festival and is also competing for the Sebastiane Latino Award at the San Sebastián Film Festival in Spain. The feature film’s debut in Latin America will take place on August 8, during the Peruvian festival, which has previously celebrated productions such as “Bacurau” and “A Febre“.

Feature film explores the relationship between a former inmate and a male escort

The film tells the story of Wellington, played by João Pedro Mariano, a young man who, after leaving a detention center, is taken in by Ronaldo, a male escort portrayed by Ricardo Teodoro. The plot explores the relationship between the characters and addresses themes such as exploitation, protection, and jealousy, as Wellington seeks to find himself within a new family formed by Ronaldo, his ex-wife Priscila (Ana Flavia Cavalcanti), and his partner Janaína (Bruna Linzmeyer).

Shortly after being released from a juvenile detention center, Wellington (João Pedro Mariano) finds himself adrift on the streets of São Paulo. During a visit to a pornographic cinema, he meets Ronaldo (Ricardo Teodoro), a male escort who teaches him new ways to survive. Gradually, their relationship evolves into a passionate affair full of conflicts, between exploitation and protection, jealousy and complicity.

Cast and Crew

The cast of “Baby” includes, in addition to the leads, Ana Flavia Cavalcanti, Bruna Linzmeyer, Luiz Bertazzo, Marcelo Varzea, Mauricio de Barros, Kyra Reis, Patrick Coelho, Baco Pereira, Sylvia Prado, Ariane Aparecida, Victor Hugo Martins, Kelly Campello, and Cleo Coelho. The technical team features professionals such as Joana Luz and Pedro Sotero in cinematography, Thales Junqueira in art direction, and Bruno Prado and Caê Rolfsen in the original soundtrack.

The film’s distribution has been confirmed in 16 countries, including Greece, the Czech Republic, the United States, France, and Germany. “The distribution deals were secured during the Marché du Film at the Cannes Film Festival by the agency M-appeal, which was also responsible for Caetano’s first feature film, “Corpo Elétrico“.

Baby” is a coproduction between Brazil, France, and the Netherlands, with funding from the National Film Agency (Ancine) and support from various international institutions such as Aide Aux Cinémas Du Monde and the Hubert Bals Fund. The production benefited from the collaboration of several Brazilian companies, including Spcine, Telecine, and Canal Brasil, and the distribution is handled by Vitrine Filmes.

Feature film is a highlight in several awards

Baby” has garnered attention in the international press and has already been screened at several festivals, including Wroclaw in Poland, where it filled sessions and won over the audience. The world premiere took place at the 63rd Critics’ Week in Cannes in May, with the presence of director Marcelo Caetano and actors João Pedro Mariano, Ana Flavia Cavalcanti, Bruna Linzmeyer, Cleo Coelho, and Ricardo Teodoro. The latter was awarded Best Breakthrough Actor.

In addition to festival recognition, “Baby” has been praised by critics, being considered one of the “Bibles” of the entertainment industry by The Hollywood Reporter.
