Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer this week signed into law HB 4718, which prohibits the use of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression as a legal defense for a crime. The Advocate has this story.

A judge in Arizona dismissed a case brought by the America First Legal Group, a group founded by former Trump advisor Stephen Miller. The suit had challenged the Mesa school district’s policies which allow transgender students to use the restroom which aligns with their gender and allows the student to request a name for teachers to call them. This story comes from the Arizona Republic.

A federal judge who was appointed by Former President Trump has denied a request by Moms For Liberty which would have expanded the injunction against the Biden administration’s new rules regarding discrimination against transgender people, including students. The Advocate has this story.

The state of West Virginia has requested that the Supreme Court take up the case of whether it needs to cover gender-affirming care in its Medicaid program. This story comes from the Associated Press.

The Supreme Court of Nebraska has upheld that state’s ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors. The Hill has this story.

An article in Vox says that two recent Appeals Court decisions struck down all of the new Department of Education guidelines, based on the Biden administration’s rules, even though the plaintiffs only objected to the rights of transgender students (especially regarding which restroom they may use). This alone could make the Supreme Court take up the case.

New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu signed three anti-transgender pieces of legislation in one day this week. He did not sign into law a bathroom bill, but he did sign a bill banning transgender athletes, a ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors, and a bill which requires teachers to notify parents in advance if the subject of transgender people will be discussed in class. Kenji Spurgeon, a 23-year-old Black transgender woman, was shot to death on July 1 in Seattle. An obituary appears at the Human Rights Campaign.

A man was arrested and charged with attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed a 17-year-old transgender woman eighteen times at Miami International Airport. He has been denied bond. NBC News has this story. The victim was taken to the hospital, where she is in serious condition.

The Paris Olympics have begun. A story in The Conversation notes that, at the moment, the momentum seems to be tipping toward excluding transgender athletes from high-level competitions.

Brittney Griner’s wife, Cherelle Griner, has given birth to a boy named Bash. The WNBA star says that Bash will call her, “Pops.” This story comes from Them.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson has a new short film, called It’s Okay. The film concerns drag bans in the U.S. Out.com has this story.

In Britain, a new set of guidelines for transgender surgical patients has been created. It is independent of the NHS, yet it is the work of doctors and medical professionals who deal with transgender patients. This story comes from PinkNews.

A review ordered by the U.K. government found that there has not been an “explosion” in the number of trans youths committing suicide yet. The concern was how trans youths would react to the ban on puberty blockers, and so far, it has not made much of an impact. PinkNews has this story.

We mentioned recently that the only transgender politician in Russia announced that she would de-transition. This week, CNN reported that Yulia Alyoshina announced that she was not going to detransition after all.

In an editorial for the Salt Lake Tribune, a young transgender man says he is tired of transgender people being used as political pawns.
