The 2024 Venice Film Festival has announced its list of films competing for the Golden Lion, and one of the highlights is Luca Guadagnino‘s new feature film, “Queer”, starring Daniel Craig. In an interview with Deadline, the festival’s artistic director, Alberto Barbera, praised Craig’s performance, highlighting his courageous portrayal of a gay man.

“He portrays a gay man in a very direct and courageous way, including some quite explicit sex scenes. I think it’s the performance of his life so far. The same goes for Joaquin Phoenix in ‘Joker 2’. These are two truly standout performances ” affirmed Barbera. The film also stars Drew Starkey and Omar Apollo.
The director also highlighted that this year’s lineup features some projects with sexual content. “Wait until you see ‘Disclaimer’ [laughs]. It is quite comprehensive in an erotic sense. I was surprised. After years of a lack of sex and eroticism in films, this is one of the biggest surprises in this year’s lineup – the predominant theme of sex, and the number of erotic scenes and sexual behavior “, he said.

Daniel Craig stars in ‘Queer’
“Queer” was filmed in April 2023 at a film studio in Rome, and tells the story of Lee, an American expatriate played by Craig, who flees to Mexico City after a drug bust in New Orleans in the 1940s. Based on the eponymous book by William S. Burroughs, the film explores themes of identity and displacement.

Rumors suggest that “Queer” will feature several explicit sex scenes and have a runtime of three hours. Burroughs’ work, published in 1985, was written between 1951 and 1953 and serves as a sequel to his previous book, “Junkie“.
Other films featured at the festival
Another highly anticipated film at the festival is “Joker: Folie à Deux“, directed by Todd Phillips and starring Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix. Barbera described the film as “a dystopian musical” and praised its boldness and creativity. He highlighted that, although it is a sequel, the film is completely different from the first ‘Joker’ movie.
“If you expect the same in terms of violence or other elements, you will be surprised. When I saw the film in Los Angeles in early February, there were only four or five of us in the screening room, including the writer Scott Silver, and we were astonished; our mouths were open at the end of the screening. It’s a darker film “, he tells.
The Venice Film Festival lineup also includes Walter Salles’ new film, “I Am Still Here“, starring Fernanda Torres, Fernanda Montenegro, and Selton Mello, as well as other titles such as “The Room Next Door“.
