From April 26 to June 23, 2024, the MASP – Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand – presents Video Room: Tourmaline featuring audiovisual works by the American artist, filmmaker, writer, and activist whose work highlights cultural expressions, oppressions, and modes of survival and resistance within the black communities. queer and transgender individuals in the United States.

Curated by Teo Teotonio from the MASP curatorial team, the artist’s exhibition, still unpublished in Brazil, brings together the works Atlantic is a Sea of Bones (2017), Happy Birthday, Marsha! (2018), and Salacia (2019).

By establishing connections between fiction and reality, Tourmaline seeks to reformulate beliefs and initiate a paradigm shift with the aim of imagining a future free from oppression based on race, gender, and sexuality. Video Room: Tourmaline is the second exhibition of 2024 at the Museum, which this year includes audiovisual displays as part of its program dedicated to LGBTQIA+ diversity stories.

About the artist: Tourmaline was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts (USA) in 1983. She currently lives and works in New York and is participating in the Whitney Biennial 2024 at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the group exhibition Acts of Resistance: Photography, Feminisms and the Art of Protest at the South London Gallery in London. Her works have been exhibited at the Mudam Museum of Modern Art in Luxembourg (2023), the 59th Venice Biennale (2022), and in group exhibitions at Tate Modern in London, MOMA in New York (2021), among others. Her work is part of the collections of international institutions such as the J. Paul Getty Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, and Tate.
